Library professionals face numerous stressors in their work such as challenging patron behaviors, providing excellent customer service, and shrinking staff numbers and budgets. Those serving in an administrative position are faced with attempting to manage not only their own well-being, but those of the staff they supervise. Stressors in the library profession can lead to burn out, vicarious trauma, or other mental health concerns without the use of self-care strategies. Library administrators will benefit from learning ways to promote long-term wellness for themselves and their staff to continue to serve their community of users.
Attendees will be able to:
• Define self-care and why it matters in managing chronic stress
• Differentiate burnout, vicarious trauma, and other mental health concerns
• Develop effective self-care strategies
• Implement strategies to support staff in their self-care
