The tools for creating spiffy looking print materials, online presentations, and professional-looking websites keep improving. And it’s easy to find inexpensive and free templates providing frameworks. You can plug in your own content and produce a slick-looking set of slides for a webcast or a file to print for a poster or mailer.

But, without some basic knowledge of graphic design, you might not know enough to make better decisions about which typestyle or color combination will work best for the job at hand. Or how to tweak a canned template for an annual report so that it aligns with your new, attractive (and expensive) logo. Or how to put together a decent-looking promotional piece for an event when your talented artistic staff person is on vacation.

Topics include applying theories of legibility for digital and print-ready files, guiding the reader’s eyes across a page or screen so little is missed, keeping designs simple and replicable, requirements for creating a logo, choosing fonts and colors, the challenges of moving a digital file to a print format, and some of the tricks that professional graphic designers use when they are in a hurry!

The assumption is that you don’t have a degree in design, are short-staffed, and are working with a minimal budget. This program isn’t about specific software programs, but rather design concepts.
