Rare Books Through Innovative Tech – New Date

With a well-established partnership between technology and user engagement in libraries, there is an increasing opportunity to highlight rare and historical materials beyond the pages through innovation and emerging technologies. The use of various available technologies to supplement physical material promotes both access and the long-term security and preservation of material. The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Reynolds-Finley Historical Library (RFHL), a collection of over 20,000 rare books and manuscripts pertaining to the history of the health sciences, continues to explore and adopt new technologies to feature collections and enhance the overall user experience. In this webinar, Anna Kaetz, Assistant Professor & Digital Strategy and Metadata Librarian for RFHL, will discuss various technologies and platforms that have been implemented into exhibits and collection promotion, along with statistical evidence when possible to gauge user participation.

Presenter: Anna Kaetz is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Digital Strategy and Metadata Librarian for the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library of UAB Libraries, where she has assisted with the expansion of the virtual presence of the library and collections for the past two years. She received her master’s degrees in Library and Information Science from the University of Alabama and in History from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her areas of interest include exploring emerging technologies and specifically their use in library exhibitions and pedagogy; using linked data and descriptive metadata to diversify special collections; and to coordinate the long-term digitization efforts of rare materials.
