The Low-Tech Makerspace: A Passive Programming Option to Delight and Engage Library Users of All Ages

February 28 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EST

Makerspaces

Makerspaces can vary in scope, complexity, size, cost, and more, so deciding which activities to include, how to keep them organized, how to budget for them, and the logistics of access for them can be daunting for library workers interested in providing a makerspace to their library users. In this session, you will discover the incredible benefits of offering a low-tech makerspace as a unique learning environment for patrons of all ages. Learn how to design and set up a passive, low-tech makerspace that encourages creativity, problem-solving, mindfulness, and social-collaboration, using simple and affordable materials. High school librarian and MLIS professor Kelsey Bogan will share all the tips and tricks she’s learned while launching and maintaining a makerspace in her busy high school library in the last 5 years, including tips for how to keep things organized, how to identify which activities to include, and how to find options that work for budgets of all sizes.

Presenter: Kelsey Bogan is a high school Librarian, an adjunct Professor for SJSU’s MSLIS program, and a professional Speaker/Presenter. who most enjoys teaching media literacy, utilizing social media for advocacy and community building, and implementing antiracism and equity work into collection & program development efforts. Connect with Kelsey on twitter @kelseybogan, Instagram & Tiktok @gvhslibrary, or on her blog www.dontyoushushme.com!

In addition, this session will be available to stream as a podcast.
