In its infancy stages, Facebook gave its users opportunities to share their experiences using text; and, a bit later, the option to share photographs. Now, society is creating, consuming, and sharing more realistic experiences using video via Instagram reels, TikTok videos, and other video sharing applications. Because Facebook believes that the next phase for social media will be sharing more immersive experiences, they changed their name to Meta on October 28, 2021. Other companies, like Microsoft, Disney, Roblox, Unity, and many others have started pushing the boundaries of what this technology can do now while offering visions of what it could become in the future. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that the Metaverse will enable us to “embed computing into the real-world and to embed the real-world into computing” and that is an exciting way to think about what all this could mean in the near future.
In this “webinar”, we will meet inside Spatial, an equitable and promising technology giving people from all over the world opportunities to work in collaborative AR/VR (augmented/virtual reality) spaces while rendering time and space irrelevant. We will spend some time experiencing the early stages of the Metaverse while conceptualizing where we think libraries could become an integrated part of this space, similar to the way librarians connected to others during the Web 2.0 movement. It will be incredible to witness where Spatial and other social VR/AR applications go within the next 2-3 years since recently the “metaverse” concept has started to gain serious traction in many industries.
If you are unable to join via virtual reality, a Zoom and a direct Spatial link will be provided as optional viewing opportunities for desktop computers and mobile devices.
