This presentation will highlight an academic librarian’s attempts to use social media as a tool for creating meaningful connections with her patrons while enhancing her personal brand as a subject specialist. Two case studies will be featured, one in which she joined a graduate student Facebook group for an academic year, allowing her to be a “fly on the wall” to conversations about their information needs, and another where she created and maintained a Twitter account to promote her role as the journalism librarian, having more than 800 interactions (retweets, favorites, mentions, etc.) with journalism students, faculty and staff over a three year period. Best practices will be discussed as well as challenges and lessons learned. Goals for the future will be outlined and new opportunities on the horizon (Librarians on periscope,etc.) will be proposed.

Biography ~ April Hines
April Hines is the Journalism and Mass Communications Librarian at the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries. A Southwest Florida native, she received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida in 2004. Hines did freelance work before completing a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of South Florida. She has more than a decade of academic library experience and has worked at the UF Education Library and UF Law Library. Her research areas include inquiry based information literacy instruction, facilitative processes, library marketing and outreach and social media engagement. She has presented on topics such as creating a library student ambassador program, using ethnic newspapers to reach underserved communities, and revealing hidden assets through speed meetings at libraries. Hines has served on the Florida Library Association’s PR and Marketing Committee which executed the statewide Florida Library Snapshot Day campaign.
