During the 2014-2015 academic year, the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, working with the National Endowment of the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, celebrates the ten year anniversary of the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest. This language arts program brings an appreciation of poetry to high school students throughout the United States. Participants master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and improve their reading comprehension scores. Students are guided toward developing a personal relationship with great poems while learning about their literary heritage through poetry recitation. The Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs coordinates distribution of curriculum materials to teacher’s throughout Florida and then hosts Florida’s Poetry Out Loud State Finals every spring. The state champion then travels to the National Poetry Out Loud competition in Washington, DC. This year, Florida’s Poetry Out Loud State Finals will be held on February 28th here in Tallahassee. Alison Schaeffer-Murphy, coordinator of the state-wide program will discuss Poetry Out Loud and how public libraries can participate in this exciting event.
