Dealing with Disinformation: How Libraries Can Address Fake News

Fake news seems to dominate the news and social media.

However, libraries have a real opportunity to educate their communities about information and media literacy. This webinar will help you learn about the historical and contemporary concepts of fake news so that you can better understand how to address disinformation on a local level. Additionally, you will receive ideas about how you can ensure access to credible resources.

Learn how to develop courses, information guides, and partnerships to dismantle disinformation.

Presenter ~ Barbara Alvarez 
Barbara Alvarez is an Information Specialist and Instructor of Information Science. She has a Master in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign and is a PhD student at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Barbara is the author of Embedded Business Librarianship for the Public Librarian with ALA Editions and has written articles about disinformation and fake news for Public Libraries Magazine. Presenter ~ Sam Molzahn
Sam Molzahn is the adult reference and technology librarian at the Franklin Public Library (WI) and earned his MLIS from UW-Milwaukee in 2017. He has taught classes on fake news and media literacy to public library patrons, a fake news continuing education course at the UW-Madison iSchool, and is passionate about creating informed citizens of all ages.
