In 2008 at St. Petersburg College, hundreds of CDs were digitized and added to a shared iTunes collection, so the library would resemble a record store where people could easily browse for and listen to music before they checked out vinyl, CDs, cassettes, VHS tapes, zines, and music books/magazines to bring home to enjoy. Cue the tape to 2022 to learn how this space is still evolving to offer a more user-friendly way to discover music in the library’s “Listening Lab” similar to the way people use brick-and-mortar record stores.

In this webinar:

– Learn how a basic room was converted into a listening lab with turntables, DJ mixers, vinyl, cassettes, and much more;
– Discover how the music collection is being cataloged and shared with the community;
– Explore a variety of programming ideas ranging from small concerts and radio programming to workshops offering proper vinyl handling and turntable use, zine creation, and     various instrument lessons;
– Understand the basics of valuing CDs, vinyl, VHS, and other mediums; and
– Highlight how people are using the space and interacting with the collection.

Presenter: Chad Mairn is an Information Services Librarian, Assistant Professor, and manages the Innovation Lab at St. Petersburg College.  While an undergraduate studying Humanities at the University of South Florida (USF), Chad was awarded a Library of Congress Fellowship archiving Leonard Bernstein’s personal papers.
