Once upon a time tech skills in a library were limited to transferring a phone call to a different extension, convincing the copy machine to print both sides of a document, and being able to pull up a library customer’s record at the circ desk. 21st century library customers have a different expectation of what employees know, particularly given that their local library might be their only source of computer access and tech expertise.

What are your library’s employee requirements regarding tech know-how? Are your standards different for new hires who had their own cellphone before they could walk versus veteran staffers who typed out the cards for the physical catalog that used to dominate the front lobby of the library? Does your library’s written plans–strategic, technology, and operational–identify current and future skills needed to keep up with customer needs? How do you advertise positions? Are the tech requirements spelled out in job postings? How do you test potential candidates? What is expected of new hires during the probationary period? How do you ensure established staff members don’t lag behind? And how do you refresh everyone’s skills as the tech world evolves and changes?

Outcomes:
– Ensure written plans guide tech priorities for the everyone who works for the library.
– Establish paper and digital “tech cheat sheets” that all employees can use for reference and share with library customers.
– Make in-house training more enjoyable rather than making it feel like punishmen
