Training-teaching-learning is at the heart of what many library staff members do day-to-day, but they are often so busy that they are unable to keep up with current trends and challenges in this area. Using the Association for Talent Development’s State of the Industry report as a starting point, we will look at the broad learning landscape we support, explore efficiencies and expenditures in learning, review content distribution and delivery methods, and discuss some of the impacts technology is having in our training-teaching learning efforts.

This hands-on discussion of the overall state of the training-teaching-learning industry will provide plenty of examples of how various organizations foster great learning opportunities and will offer participants a chance to share what they are seeing in their own libraries.

Participants, by the time they leave the session, will:

Be able to cite at least three key elements of the State of the Industry and other training-teaching-learning reports that can positively guide library training-teaching-learning efforts
Acquire at least three ideas they can use in further developing and implementing their own workplace learning and performance (staff training) programs
Be able to describe at least two engaging elements of content offered through learning and development programs within and outside of libraries

Instructor Bio ~ Paul Signorelli
Paul, co-author of Workplace Learning & Leadership with Lori Reed, served as director of staff training for the San Francisco Public Library system before becoming an independent writer-trainer-instructional designer-presenter-consultant. He continues to design and facilitate online and face-to-face learning opportunities throughout the U.S.; is active on New Media Consortium Horizon Report advisory boards/expert panels, in the Association for Talent Development (ATD–formerly the American Society for Training & Development) and American Library Association Learning Round Table; and explores innovations in onsite and online training-teaching-learning and community partnerships.
