Get Your Community Moving

Tuesday, July 2 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am EDT

Management

Have you ever heard about physical literacy? Do you want to learn more about how you could implement more movement-based programs in your library?
For almost two decades now, Jenn Carson, Director of the L.P. Fisher Public Library in Woodstock, NB Canada, has been encouraging library patrons, volunteers, and staff to get up and move. These movement-based programs include yoga, story walks, circulating fitness equipment, kite-flying, running, dance classes, and much more. They can be adapted to people with different abilities and even taken online! Join Carson as she discusses her career-spanning journey implementing movement-based programs in libraries, schools, and museums.

She will cover:
• Her triumphs and challenges getting these programs off the ground
• Share a few self-care tips when implementing these programs
• How you can take these principles and create a new physical literacy program in your library no matter your budget or background

Presenter: Jenn Carson is the Director of the LP Fisher Public Library and the creator of www.yogainthelibrary.com, a popular, non-profit resource dedicated to educating librarians and teachers about creating yoga and meditation programs in public, school, and academic libraries. In 2016, Carson received the Innovation Award from the New Brunswick Public Library Service for her physical literacy initiatives. In 2017, she earned the Atlantic Provinces Library Association Memorial Award to create a website for physical literacy programming in libraries (www.physicaliteracyinthelibrary.com) and was declared a “remarkable woman making a difference in Atlantic Canada” by Amplify East (www.amplifyeast.com/amplifiedvoices/jenn-carson). In 2019, she won the Library Journal Movers & Shakers Award and the Atlantic Provinces Library Association Advocacy Award for her public programming and community involvement. She is the author of three books and numerous chapters and articles on library and community services and you can find out more about her work at www.jenncarson.com.
